In Team America the editors use cross cutting and montage to show the training that took many years, compacted into 1:20. The editors instantly change the speed of which the film gives an impression to the audience, that it has been a long time into a rather short time. The purpose of this is to skip through days, hours presented in the training thorough time he learns to train in 0:30 of the clip he's reading a boom and 0:45 the gym. This suggest that it's been a long-time. You can see the characters challenges he focuses at the beginning, middle and nearer to the end he progresses. In 1:07 the characters begin to swop acts as he's able to defeat he's trainer
The director and editor was also able to include a soundtrack that set the atmosphere of time “From just a beginner to a pro” This connotes that he’s starting as a beginner and wants to become a pro in whatever he’s about to do. In addition this gives an opportunity allowing the editor and director to add more footage into the film as it has been cut down to what would have been a long film, showing the weeks of training day by day.
The editor has used a cut from one action to another in a different location to show the audience that they are all happening at the same time. This is known as cross cutting originated Porter. A good example of this is in the film star wars, At the beginning we started in a HQ location, then we move outside of the HQ to see the action that is currently taking place then we move further away to a different location 'Jungle Biom'
Slow-motion:
The editor slows down real down action. This is known as slow motion. It is where a scene is slowed down to make it dramatic for the audience. A good example of this is in the film inception, they use slow motion to show the impact of the explosions and how massive they. Also slow motion is used in the inception to show that they are in a dream world, so everything is slowed down however they are still moving in normal speed. This allows the audience to feel the impact of the explosions and allows the editors change the pace of things, to give the audience some time to look at everything as with a slow motion they can rest their eyes and take time to look at every detail.
In inception the editors use freeze frame and slow motion used to show the explosion in the dream world to make it seem realistic. It's an eye line used to make it seem like characters are looking at each other. The scene was filmed with them sitting together in different shots, having a conversation which is a shot reverse shot it's also a 180 degree rule. In 1:30 in the clip there's a motivated cut when the lady looks at the teacup on the table shaking. It's also an eye line match. Even though, the cuts are continuity it is still a discontinuity scene the use of slow motion in the edit of the film doesn't make sense, distracting the audience. Therefore, it's an alternative techniques.
The editors use cross cutting and rapid transitions to show his journey to London. within 5 seconds Taxi, drink , aeroplane, London taxi. It is funny and shocking. The purpose of two different scenes in one shot is odd. However, interviewing the audience can judge between the two characters their behaviour, the way they speak to one is more humble as the other one is harsh in 0:54 he's has a security behind revealing his power. The close up of their foot, one is wearing a pair socks with the British flag suggesting he's in London and the American flag in the other shot background establishing their location.
In the scene walking up the stairs there is a 180 degree rule throughout the scene, as character also sticks on one side the purpose makes the audience observe his steps because it flows and nothing changes, this is space of movements and time continuity. Including a Match on Action is used to show the man entering the building from different angles in 0:19-0:20. The eye line match is used in 0:23-25 seconds looking at the sign
In the scene Fight club the editors use jump cuts to create a feeling of confusion. The purpose of this matches his 'disability' 'Insomnia' which explains why things are dull and confusing were experiencing and seeing what he sees. There's an instant Jump cut in 0:16 of the scene, and space in different scene. Furthermore, this is an Alternative it's an instant break in continuity same shot, same scene which is a special effect originated by Melies used in his genre of films 'Horror'
The editors use motivated cuts between the battle to show that the more they get connected the cuts get rapid as they start fighting because it makes the audience feel as thought they were part of the action
utting to a beat:
this is were editors over-lap audio (music) and footage together and making sure the footage changes when the music changes. a good example of this is the ' we come one faithless music video.
the purpose of cutting to the beat is to follow the song so we (the audience) are engaged in the video and would find the music video more interesting to watch.
